CHEN:
Sri Lanka has imposed unprecedented security measures ahead of this weekend's South Asian summit in Colombo. 12,000 additional police are deployed throughout the capital.
Meetings between South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) normally look to foster economic development in one of the world's poorest regions. But terrorism could well be on the agenda with the latest deadly bombings in India.
There are security problems in other SAARC nations, as well. Afghanistan is battling a resurgent Taliban and Nepal still does not have a government. But Sri Lanka, who is fighting a bitter separatist war, is hoping to retake the rebels' stronghold.
[Rohitha Bogollagama, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister]:
"We are happy to showcase Sri Lanka at a time when the government of Sri Lanka is making a strong effort in terms of bringing normalcy to Sri Lanka."
The conflict has killed more than 70,000 people in the country.
