Dog owners buy their pet expecting things to turn out well. Yet, all too often things don't go as expected and the dog is given to an animal shelter. This doesn't need to be the cause, though. It is possible for a dog that is trained well to become a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted family member. It doesn't have to be hard to train your dog, you will see that if you spend a little time it can be easy.

When you train your dog, you need to establish control. Your dog must understand that you're in control, so that he knows to obey and respect you. Avoid allowing your dog to lead you during walks. Instead, walk in front of your dog to show that you are the leader of this pack.

When training, find a verbal clue your pet can understand so they will know exactly when to do as you say. It's faster to tell your dog "yes" than it is to find and give it a treat.

Don't spend too long on a single dog training session. If you spend a lot of time on only one thing, your dog can get bored and frustrated. Do not spend more than 10 minutes on each session.

Come up with a phrase that you can teach your puppy during house training. When it's time for him to go outside to do his business, say "Elimination Device...Activate!" or whatever phrase you chose to call his attention to the task at hand.

Dog training means consistency. Use your dog's name when giving a command. Then, say the command. Dogs listen for their name because they know it means you will say something else.

Primary reinforcement is good to use when training your dog. This means you should reward it for good behavior. This can be in the form of treats or something that your dog loves to do. This lets your dog know how to earn something it wants.

Call your dogs name when speaking to him to keep him focused. Do this consistently during the first several weeks to get your dog to pay attention to you. Put some thought into your dogs name, and choose one that isn't too long and that isn't too similar to other common words.

You can rest assured that when you train your puppy, they may have an accident in the house. If your puppy has an accident, clean it up straight away. When a dog uses the house to relive itself, the smell can linger on the carpet if not cleaned properly. You will then have a dog that will continue to use that same spot all of the time. Check any local stores or pet shops for products that are specifically designed to remove the urine smell from a carpet.

The tone of your voice is important during training. Commands, corrections and praise should all have their own tone in order to help your dog distinguish cause and effect with his and your behavior. Keep your commands short and sharp while corrections should be louder.

It's not impossible to have a dog that is healthy and happy. All that your dog needs is good training, the right amount of attention, and plenty of support and love from you. Follow the steps listed above and your dog will become, and remain, an important part of your family.
